Karen and Sherrif Sarcov

Tuesday, October 31, 12:43 p.m.

"9-1-1. What's your emergency?" The dispatcher, Karen Obrigewitch, asked the first caller after lunch. She had overindulged on Reeses' pumpkins and her belly gurgled and whined.

"They're dead. All dead!" A woman shrieked before dissolving into a drawn-out string of sobbed words.

"Can you please tell me your name?" Karen glanced at the caller's number and the accompanying information. Amelia Renholt. Cell phones were convenient until service sucked, or one needed an exact address.

The caller's voice, inflected with hysterics, made her response almost indistinct. Karen relied on the dispatch data.

Her ability to disassociate names from real people during training calls differed significantly from those during real-time. Calls coming from a landline made life significantly easier pinpointing the location. Karen focused on the details. The additional demographics of Amelia included her age: seventy-nine. Sex: female. Race: white.

"Thank you, Amelia. Can you please tell me what happened?"

Amelia hiccupped. "They attacked me. I had to… had to defend myself. Right?" She broke off, then added, "Oh, my babies. I killed them all. My babies."

Whimpering filled the dispatcher's earpiece.

Karen's stomach churned with ferocity, and her heartbeat increased. She swallowed down the burn and said in a calm but firm tone, "Are you hurt, Amelia?" Although every call was recorded and a transcript flashed across her computer screen, she typed a message to the area law enforcement, alerting the office of the name and address before pulling up the nearest ambulance service. Keening cut through her keystrokes.

"Yes. I've been stabbed."

Shit. "How many attacked you?" Multiple victims, some potentially deceased, she typed in the alert.

"Four. Four of my babies. After they killed Sammie and Cora. Their family! Why would they do that?"

Armed and potentially dangerous individuals still at large, Karen continued typing.

Karen kept Amelia on the phone, talking, until help arrived ten minutes later. She took the 9-1-1 operator job exactly seventeen months earlier. She would last precisely seven more days.
